Moriyama House +20%

SANAA

Tokyo, Japan

The idea of this project came from the approval of the Law Decree of the House floor in 2009, the document that processes the lines of the emergency measures proposed by the Government for the revival of the construction sector. It involves the ability for owners to expand by 20% the cubic volume of residential properties with possibility of change the destination of use [...].

I therefore applied this decree to a large project: it is the Moriyama House, designed by SANAA study, founded by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, whose I revised the plans, sections and elevations and then moved to the expansion project.

It develops in height and is, in fact, suspended thanks to a system of pillars, which is not occupying the open spaces of the project SANAA at the ground level: this choice is also designed to maintain the balance of the composition of the project, which is evidently based on a new definition of dwelling house in a private and shared way through the strong connection between the interior and the exterior. The structure is completely made of wood and consists of two blocks of equal size in contrast to the existing prefabricated steel modules, suspended and finally connected by gangways, in order to maintain the movement continuity between them. The project is to be intended as a museum/exhibition/ studio space, features that are missing in the project (currently) existing.
